Graduated in 1982 from the famous Ballard Beauty School in Seattle, Washington (famous to locals). Trained by a Vidal Sassoon educator during her school career, Dana honed her skills as a precision hair cutter. Her passion truly was and is for color, she has professionally trained with Framesi International, Wella, Sebastian, Loreal, and Keune. Also in her wheel house is as an educator, offering a full school education for Cosmetology, Manicuring, and Esthetics thru the State of Washington Apprenticeship Program. Through this program an individual can train for a career in the beauty industry right here on San Juan Island at the salon. She has successfully trained three individuals, and continues each year to add to her strong solid staff. With the drive and passion for creativity, she offers a wonderful setting in the heart of the community here.

Dana is available at the Spa Monday thru Friday 9-5, with some Saturdays and evening.

A resident of San Juan Island since 2004, our Spa Director Janie has a passion to inspire the growth of women in business. With her expertise in business management, sales and marketing, she brings many creative ideas to the spa. As part of the spa apprenticeship program, Janie has supported the business aspect to help get apprentices trained for their careers. Starting as a client of the salon, she had the privilege of working with Dana on the research and development of Spa d Bune. Janie also helped created the second Spa d Bune which opened in March 2020.

When Janie is not at work she enjoys being an artist creating hand painted silk scarves and wearable art.

Janie is available at the spa Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am-4pm.

Originally from Michoacán in Mexico, Alma has lived on the island since 2004. Since she was 10, she has wanted to be a hair stylist. Her dream are coming true as she was chosen to be the first Spa d Bune  Apprentice in July 2015. She is learning  real industry skills from our practicing professionals. Apprenticeship is real-time training with real clients here at the spa. Alma has started building her  business, client base and career here on San Juan Island. She lives here with her husband, and their two girls. Alma has completed the apprenticeship program and is now a licensed stylist at the spa.

With big city, international, experience, Sonia specializes in color, highlights, balayage, wedding design, hair restorative treatments like Brazilian Blowout, and enjoys skin care, too. Sonia’s passion for hair styling began in her native Brazil when she picked up her mother’s scissors and began cutting her sisters and neighbor kids hair as a little girl. She graduated in 1999 from SENAC, Brazil’s respected national technical school in cosmetology and hair design and owned her own salon in Sao Paulo for 17 years.

A creative mind for color and style, Sonia is a thoughtful, patient, and talented beauty professional dedicated to client satisfaction with amazing results. Sonia moved to San Juan Island with her husband in 2018 after living and working in Melbourne, Australia. In her spare time, she loves hiking, biking, reading, cooking, learning different languages, and singing gospel songs.

Tara Martel’s diverse career and beauty experience bring a unique flair to Spa d Bune. Tara, a sixth-generation San Juan Islander, upon graduating from Friday Harbor High School, spent several years honing her exceptional customer service skills before obtaining specialized training at Euro Institute, located in Bellevue Washington. Upon graduation from the Euro Institute, she obtained her esthetics license and began her career in the science of beauty and skin, opening a beauty boutique in downtown Friday Harbor. Since then, Tara has attended many additional advanced skin care courses and esthetics educational training.

Among other things, Tara provides expertise in Waxing, Exfoliation, Glycolic Acid Treatments, and Aromatherapy treatments. Most recently, Tara completed her certification in Fibroblasting from Prive Academy and is excited to introduce this new treatment to her clients and the San Juan Islands. Tara’s professional esthetician experience includes ownership of an upscale beauty boutique, six years working with the team at the Afterglow Spa Roche Harbor, followed by five years sharing her knowledge at The Spa at EarthBox before relocating to her new home, Spa d Bune.

Tara is passionate about her clients and healthful beauty and works with a mission to help each unique client feel beautiful and better about themselves. It gives Tara a profound satisfaction to know she influences her clients’ self-esteem and, ultimately, their life fulfillment.

At 50, Kim wanted to add to her already colorful resume with learning the world of hair design; she started the apprenticeship program here at Spa d bune. In 2020, Kim is now a fully licensed hair designer and accepting new clients at Spa d bune. One of her specialities is working with hair color and highlighting. Kim loves working with people and helping them feel good about themselves. Kim is available Wednesday through Friday 9 am ~ 5:30 pm and Saturdays 10 am ~ 4 pm.
